SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES

  The School of Foreign Language Studies at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University provides four-year undergraduate programs in both English and Japanese studies. It also offers courses of English, Japanese, French, German and Russian languages for students at the university who are not taking a major in language studies.

  The school's faculty members of over 100 boasts thirty-three professors and associate professors, including some who have studied overseas in such countries as the USA., Japan, and the UK. Three young teachers have joined the China Scholarship Program and will be studying at universities in the USA , the UK , and Canada in 2007. In addition to the Chinese faculty members there is a team of foreign teachers from the USA , Canada , Australia and Japan to provide expertise as native speakers in these languages. The joint faculty team has contributed to the excellence of 18,000 students studying in 50 undergraduate programs and 30 graduate programs .

  The school consists of two departments, three teaching departments, three research centers and other teaching and research facilities, namely, the Department of English Studies and the Department of Japanese Studies, both of which provide courses for language majors. College English Teaching Departments I& II and the Graduate English Teaching Deapartment offer English language courses for nonlanguage students and graduate students . Research centers include Center for Translation Studies, the Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, thecenter for English Literature and Culture. The Information and Resources Center , the Testing Laboratory for Spoken English and the Language Laboratory Center make up the teaching and research facilities.

  The school is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including sixteen multi-media language laboratories with a seating capacity of 882 and fifteen multi-media classrooms, which provide an ideal environment for students to improve their English listening and speaking abilities. Its radio station broadcasts a variety of English programs daily. The Information and Resources Center contains a collection of more than 30,000 books and dictionaries as well as 2,000 CDs , DVDs and video tapes. An addition to leading Chinese journals, the school subscribes to mainstream English news magazines such as Newsweek , Time , US News and World Report , and Reader's Digest, and such prestigious journals as Journal of Linguistics, Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, Language and Intercultural Communication, System, Cognitive Linguistics, American Literature, Target, and Language Testing. These magazines and journals offer an excellent basis for teaching and research.

  Faculty at School of Foreign Language Studies have made remarkable achievements in translation studies, linguistics and applied linguistics research. So far, they have undertaken more than twenty research projects at ministerial, provincial and university levels. In addition, they have already published over thirty treatises, translations and textbooks as well as over 200 academic papers in journals of various levels.

  A total of 681 students are studying in the English Studies Program and 60 in the Japanese Studies Program . Equipped with the excellent teaching facilities, the school takes as its major task the provision of systematic language training , looking to improve the students' language skills both academically and practically, and enriching their multi-disciplinary knowledge in the process. Hundreds of students who are in great demand in schools, institutions, foreign affair departments, and businesses have already graduated and the employment rate of its undergraduates has remained better than 90% since 2004.

  At present, the school is actively broadening its field of study in order to meet the needs of the new century. It is now preparing for its BA degree program in Translation Studies, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL), and a MA program in English Language and Literature. It is hoped that a multi-level and multi-lingual foreign language teaching system will be formed with the integration of undergraduate education, graduate education, further education and distance education in the next five years.

  These programs combine the study of modern languages with the discipline of linguistics. The organization and curricula are the result of careful planning, dedication to good teaching and a willingness to make changes in the light of practical experience.

  In studying English and Japanese, the emphasis is placed on developing foreign language skills for Mandarin Chinese Speakers. The prime objective is that students become proficient communicators in the languages and specialists in its culture or literature. Great emphasis is placed on acquiring oral fluency, but proficiency in writing and understanding is not neglected.

  With a rich knowledge in the humanities and a firm command of the English or Japanese language, the students will, upon graduation, be at ease in a wide range of professions, such as international exchange, foreign trade, interpreting and translating, language teaching, publishing, journalism, and the civil service.
