Mechanical design & theory discipline is a key discipline of mechanical engineering discipline, which mainly researches the theory and method of mechanical design. It is among the disciplines with the longest history, and a great number of bachelors and masters of this discipline has been educated for various departments of national economy who work as designers, researchers and managers in the enterprises and public institutes with some of them becoming important leaders.         The characteristic apparel design discipline is founded in 1982, which made the university one of the earliest universities in China to found the discipline. The apparel design & engineering discipline is founded in 1988, which made the university one of the earliest universities in Zhejiang Province to found the discipline. In 1986, the university started to enroll graduate students when the discipline belongs to silk engineering discipline. In 1993, it was officially authorized to confer master’s degree of this discipline. It was appraised as well-known apparel design education institute in 1998, and approved as provincial key fostering discipline of Zhejiang in 1999, listed as key discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2002, and re-listed as key discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2004.

        Textile chemistry and dyeing & arrangement engineering discipline is a traditional and distinctive discipline of the university. The bachelor’s program is founded in 1965, and the university was authorized to confer master’s degree of the discipline in 1986 which was one of the disciplines that the university is authorized to do so. During the recent 4 decades, the university has educated thousands of high level talents for the society, which makes important contribution to the development and progress of science and technology of textile printing and dyeing industry of Zhejiang Province and even China. In recent years, the bachelor’s program puts more stress on the discipline broadening and research direction, closely combines the education and scientific research with the regional economy development of Zhejiang Province, and makes great progress in the discipline construction, scientific development and talent education etc. aspects.

        The materials science discipline was founded through combination of the original silk fiber and textile materials two discipline groups. The university started to offer bachelor’s program of “polymer materials” in 1997 (which was renamed as “materials engineering” major in 1999). In 2001, the university was authorized to offer master’s program of “materials science” in 2001 and master’s program of “materials process” in 2003. The discipline was designated as key fostering discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2003.

        Zhejiang Sci-Tech University was authorized to confer master’s degree of regional economics in 2000. In 2002, this discipline was designated as key fostering discipline of Zhejiang Province, and the university participated in the preparation of provincial key text book “Regional economics” of Zhejiang. The discipline was designated as key discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2005. The comprehensive level of the discipline is among the bests in China.

        Art design science discipline is a key fostering discipline of Zhejiang Province. It is a characteristic and distinctive discipline of the university, the development of which is attached with great importance. The design & art science discipline was founded in 1978, which is of relatively longer history compared with other disciplines of the same category. The university was authorized to confer master’s degree of the discipline in 2000. As the development of discipline and scaling up, the university founded dyeing and textile art design, plane art design and environmental art design three majors, which is among the bests in Zhejiang Province.
